Prints of this piece available from Modern Eden Gallery

An apple was all it took:
Sweet white flesh
Burnished with a sheen of golden beauty,
Tossed among three Vanities
Just to see what could be.

They say I did it
because I was jealous.
But _I_ did not need to squabble
To assert that I was the most beautiful.
I did not need a golden bauble —
Gilded shell encasing…what?
The slowly rotting guts of a fruit?

There was a hole that pierced the skin of the apple
Before I dipped it into gold.
A little worm gestated
and chewed
and gnawed through
and through
and through
Until there was no apple left,
But only little worm
Rolling round and fat
within that empty golden casing.

An apple was all it took,
Tossed among three Vanities.
